Pfizer settles with generics to extend tafamidis patent until 2031, protecting revenue

Pfizer announced settlements with three generic manufacturers-Dexcel Pharma, Hikma Pharmaceuticals and Cipla-to delay the launch of generic versions of tafamidis, the active ingredient in its rare‑disease drug Vyndamax.

The agreements keep the drug’s U.S. monopoly in place until June 1, 2031, extending the patent protection that was expected to end in 2028.

Pfizer said the extended exclusivity should keep U.S. sales relatively stable through the middle of the next decade, shielding billions of dollars in revenue.

The settlements also have broader implications for other companies pursuing generic tafamidis, including BridgeBio Pharma and Alnylam.
