Scientists boycott American Diabetes Association after conference expulsions

Following the removal of five scientists from its annual conference in June, members of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) have initiated a boycott of the organization. The protest stems from what participants describe as an unjust expulsion of the researchers during the meeting.

The boycott letter, released on September 9, pledges to halt the review of grants and new articles submitted to the ADA’s flagship journal, Diabetes Care, and to refrain from attending any meetings led by ADA leadership or the board. Hundreds of scientists have signed the open letter, demanding changes in the association’s leadership.

The ADA acknowledged the boycott in a statement, thanking professionals who continue to support its mission and emphasizing its focus on serving the diabetes community. The organization did not comment on any specific actions it might take in response to the boycott.
