Lilly reports early positive results for new JAK2 inhibitor in hard-to-treat myelofibrosis

Lilly has incorporated a JAK2‑targeting drug originally discovered by Ajax Therapeutics after its recent acquisition. The experimental pill is intended for patients with myelofibrosis, a difficult‑to‑treat blood cancer.

In a small early‑stage study, the drug showed encouraging effects in participants whose disease was hard to manage with existing therapies. Researchers presented the data publicly, noting the positive signals from this first major trial.

The compound works by binding to the JAK2 enzyme in its inactive state, a slightly different approach from currently approved JAK inhibitors such as Incyte’s Jakafi. This design aims to improve efficacy and overcome resistance that can develop with other treatments.

Analysts suggest that, if further trials confirm these findings, Lilly could become a new competitor in the myelofibrosis market, challenging the position of existing drugs like Jakafi.
