Third Rock partner’s brain cancer diagnosis highlights personal impact of biotech drug development

Oct 30, 2026·read at Fierce Biotech ↗Positive

Jigar Raythatha, a partner at Third Rock Ventures, was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer in 2023 after a routine MRI.

On the same day his diagnosis was confirmed, Servier announced positive Phase 3 results for a therapy targeting his tumor type. The drug, now approved as Voranigo, was originally discovered by Agios Pharmaceuticals, one of Third Rock’s earliest investments.

Raythatha now takes Voranigo himself and says the experience of being a patient has reshaped his outlook on drug development. He stresses that his industry knowledge helped him navigate treatment options and that personal stakes reinforce the importance of early‑stage biotech investment.

In a recent episode of "The Top Line," he discusses why taking calculated risks on promising science remains essential for bringing new medicines to patients.
