Few European-approved cancer drugs deliver high clinical benefit, analysis shows
A new analysis of European regulator approvals between Jan 2022 and July 2026 finds that most newly approved cancer medicines provide limited clinical benefit.
Out of 97 approved indications across 63 cancer drugs, only 31% were classified as high-benefit, with just nine receiving the top grade from the European Society for Medical Oncology. Only 19 drugs had at least one high-benefit indication.
The high-benefit approvals were concentrated among five manufacturers, which together contributed more than half of the 30 high-benefit indications, and four of these companies are based in China or Japan.
