Cigna to End Coverage of GLP-1 Weight-Loss Drugs Wegovy and Zepbound for Employees Starting July 1

Jun 3, 2026·read at STAT ↗RegulatoryNegative

Cigna announced it will stop covering GLP-1 weight-loss medications for its employee health plan, effective July 1.

The decision affects drugs such as Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy and Eli Lilly’s Zepbound, which have been widely used for obesity management.

Employees who are currently on these therapies can continue using them by paying out-of-pocket through manufacturer websites or the pharmacy network TrumpRx, but those cash purchases will not count toward their deductible.

The move reflects Cigna’s cost-containment strategy and could influence how insurers approach coverage of high-cost obesity drugs.
