Biogen advances tau-targeting Alzheimer drug to Phase 3 despite mixed Phase 2 data

Biogen reported results from a Phase 2 trial of its tau-targeting Alzheimer’s candidate diranersen (BIIB080). The study measured tau levels in cerebrospinal fluid and brain tissue of patients with early-stage disease.

The drug lowered tau concentrations and the reductions were linked to a slower rate of cognitive decline, which the company highlighted as a positive signal.

Despite these findings, the overall readout was described as mixed, and the trial explored three escalating dose levels, with the lowest dose showing the most favorable outcome. Biogen said it will proceed to a pivotal Phase 3 program based on the data.
