Novo Nordisk reports mixed trial results for CagriSema and ziltivekimab, cites setbacks and seeks bolt-on deals

Novo Nordisk's chief executive said the company has experienced "a couple of setbacks" after recent trial data. The phase 3 study of ziltivekimab, an IL‑6 ligand antibody, did not show a statistically significant reduction in major adverse cardiovascular events in patients with atherosclerotic disease, chronic kidney disease and inflammation.

In a separate phase 3 trial, the combination drug CagriSema (cagrilintide plus semaglutide) failed to meet its primary blood‑sugar control endpoint, although it was non‑inferior to tirzepatide for weight loss. The missed endpoint means the product will need further evaluation before any regulatory filing.

Despite the disappointing readouts, Novo's leadership emphasized that the company remains active in seeking bolt‑on acquisitions to bolster its pipeline. Future readouts are planned for ziltivekimab in heart‑failure and post‑heart‑attack studies next year.
