Tempus acquires Personalis for $1.5 billion to expand cancer genomics and MRD testing

Tempus announced it will purchase Personalis in a transaction valued at $1.5 billion, giving it full ownership of the cancer‑genomics firm.

The deal builds on a 2023 partnership where Tempus invested in Personalis and helped market its NeXT Personal minimal residual disease (MRD) liquid‑biopsy test, which detects trace tumor DNA to monitor treatment response and recurrence.

With the acquisition, Tempus will take control of the MRD assay and related technology, integrating it with its AI‑driven platform that leverages patient data to support drug development and clinical decision‑making.

Tempus CEO Eric Lefkofsky said the MRD market is large and fast‑growing, and full ownership will allow the company to expand its long‑term cancer monitoring business.
