Physician warns of surge in congenital syphilis cases, highest in decades

Jun 17, 2026·read at STAT ↗Negative

The CDC reported nearly 4,000 cases of congenital syphilis in 2024, the most since the mid-1950s. About 5-10% of those infants are stillborn or die shortly after birth, and many survivors face lifelong disability.

Most cases stem from pregnant women who are not tested or who do not receive treatment. Gaps in prenatal care are linked to lack of insurance, limited access, fear of immigration enforcement, substance use and mental-health challenges.

The physician-author calls for renewed public-health investment and stronger screening programs to reverse the trend and protect mothers and babies.
