Scientists identify previously unknown HIV reservoir in the body

Jun 4, 2026·read at STAT ↗Neutral

Scientists have reported the discovery of a new location where HIV can hide within the human body. The finding expands the list of known viral reservoirs and suggests that the virus may persist in tissues that were not previously considered.

The new insight could influence ongoing efforts to develop curative therapies, as targeting all viral hideouts is essential for eliminating infection. Researchers say that understanding this reservoir will help refine strategies aimed at eradicating the virus.

The report appeared in STAT’s Morning Rounds newsletter, which covers a range of health topics alongside the HIV story. The newsletter also included updates on Ebola and policy changes affecting NIH staff.
