Covid vaccine linked to 24% drop in overall cardiac events, study of 1 million veterans shows

Jun 15, 2026·read at STAT ↗Positive readoutPositive

A new analysis of more than one million U.S. veterans indicates that receiving a Covid‑19 vaccine is associated with a substantial reduction in heart‑related problems. Researchers observed a roughly 24% lower rate of all‑cause cardiac events among vaccinated individuals.

The cohort consisted of veterans who received flu shots at Veterans Affairs facilities in 2024, with about one‑third also getting a Covid vaccine. The study tracked participants for eight months after vaccination, comparing outcomes between those who did and did not receive the Covid shot.

Those who were vaccinated experienced about a 38% lower risk of major cardiovascular events linked to Covid infection. The protective effect was strongest in people aged 75 and older and in patients with chronic kidney or lung disease.

These findings suggest that Covid vaccination may provide broader health benefits beyond preventing infection, potentially influencing public‑health recommendations and vaccine uptake strategies.
