ADA ejects five diabetes experts for distributing editorial criticizing NIH research cuts

Security personnel removed five diabetes researchers from the American Diabetes Association's annual meeting in New Orleans after they handed out copies of an editorial that condemned recent federal cuts to biomedical research.

The expulsions have sparked outrage among the diabetes community, with senior figures demanding an apology from the ADA or a change in its leadership, fearing damage to the organization’s credibility and to diabetes care.

The protest was directed at funding reductions tied to policies of the Trump administration and at NIH director Jay Bhattacharya, who had been scheduled to deliver the keynote address before withdrawing.

John Buse, a former ADA president and co‑author of the editorial, described the incident as "inconceivable," underscoring the depth of disappointment among experts.
