FDA reports most U.S. infant formulas contain only trace or undetectable levels of heavy metals and other contaminants

The Food and Drug Administration examined 312 samples drawn from 16 major infant‑formula brands, looking for residues of heavy metals, pesticides, PFAS and phthalates.

Across the board the agency observed that contaminant levels were either undetectable or far below the limits set for drinking water, including lead, mercury, cadmium and arsenic. Pediatric experts described the findings as largely reassuring for parents.

Industry observers note that the next step is for the FDA to outline how often such testing will occur, what thresholds will trigger action, and how results will be communicated to the public.
