Haifa Smoked Fish recalls 560 lbs of cold-smoked sprats over possible Clostridium botulinum contamination
Haifa Smoked Fish of Queens, NY announced a recall of about 560 pounds of its cold-smoked sprats after testing indicated possible contamination with Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium that can cause severe, life‑threatening illness.
The recall warns consumers not to eat the product even if it appears normal, as botulism symptoms can include weakness, dizziness, double vision, difficulty speaking or swallowing, and respiratory problems that require immediate medical attention.
The affected sprats were distributed in retail stores across New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania in bulk cardboard boxes kept refrigerated. All lot numbers are included in the recall and no illnesses have been reported so far.
The FDA has opened an inspection of D&M Smoked Fish Inc., the manufacturer, to investigate the production process and ensure corrective actions are taken.
