Report shows modest health equity gains but experts warn they may not last
A new Commonwealth Fund report covering 2022 to 2024 highlights several state-level actions that narrowed health disparities. Two states broadened Medicaid eligibility, many expanded postpartum coverage for new mothers, and enrollment in Affordable Care Act marketplace plans rose sharply.
These policy changes helped reduce gaps in access to care across the United States, according to the study’s authors.
Nevertheless, researchers caution that the improvements could be short‑lived. They point to potential setbacks from policies enacted during the second Trump administration, such as alterations to insurance coverage rules, vaccine policy changes, and reductions in diversity, equity and inclusion programs.
Political scientist Miranda Yaver warned that the persistent racial inequities may worsen if these policy shifts take hold, underscoring the fragility of recent gains.
