FDA approves first generic weekly hormone patch for menopausal women

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted approval for a generic version of a once‑weekly transdermal hormone patch that combines estradiol and levonorgestrel. The product matches the brand‑name Climara Pro in dosage and delivery.

The decision is part of the agency’s effort to increase access to affordable medicines, according to the Acting FDA Commissioner. By approving a lower‑cost alternative, the FDA aims to broaden treatment options for women experiencing menopause.

The patch is indicated for women with an intact uterus to treat moderate to severe hot flashes and to help prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis. Its combined estrogen‑progestogen formulation reduces the risk of endometrial thickening that can occur with estrogen‑only therapies.
