Merck and Moderna’s melanoma vaccine success spurs five rivals to chase personalized cancer vaccine breakthrough

Merck and Moderna announced that their mRNA‑based cancer vaccine, given together with Merck’s Keytruda, extended progression‑free survival in patients with cutaneous melanoma in a late‑stage trial. The positive result is being hailed as a turning point for the cancer‑vaccine field after years of modest outcomes.

The trial data were highlighted by Christiana Bardon of MPM BioImpact, who noted that earlier attempts, such as Dendreon’s Provenge, had failed to deliver compelling benefits and ultimately led to the company’s bankruptcy.

Buoyed by the melanoma win, five other drugmakers are now pursuing personalized cancer‑vaccine programs, hoping to replicate the breakthrough and overcome the challenges that have hampered earlier efforts.
