UCSF receives $100 million gift to fund capital projects, cancer research and hospital modernization

Longtime supporters Kathy Chiao and Kenneth Hao have pledged $100 million to the University of California, San Francisco. The commitment is intended to address the university’s most urgent capital needs and to speed up innovation that benefits human health.

The flexible funding will be used for capital expansion across the UCSF campus, priority-driven innovation projects, and the Weill Cancer Hub West, which aims to accelerate cancer discovery and treatment development.

Modernization plans include redevelopment of the Parnassus Heights campus, construction of the UCSF Health Helen Diller Hospital, and upgrades to the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, adding 104 new inpatient beds and a dedicated 20-bed pediatric behavioral health unit.

The gift also supports the IMPACC program, which will study real-world safety, efficacy and equity of clinical artificial-intelligence tools, and it backs cross-campus translational initiatives that link human and veterinary medicine, building on a recent $75 million donation to UC Davis for veterinary research.
