CEPI pledges up to $16.5M to advance Egyptian biotech's Ebola vaccine candidate
CEPI has committed up to $16.5 million to help bring Minapharm’s Bundibugyo Ebola vaccine candidate into clinical testing.
The funding will support preclinical work and an early-stage human trial in Africa, aiming to assess safety and immune response.
The outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has killed more than 2,700 people, making it the second-largest Ebola outbreak on record, prompting CEPI’s call for vaccine proposals.
Minapharm, together with its Berlin unit ProBioGen, is using a modified vaccinia Ankara platform, which previously delivered long-term immunity against the related Zaire ebolavirus.
The candidate will move forward alongside other Bundibugyo vaccine projects that use different viral vectors, such as vesicular stomatitis virus and the ChAdOx platform.
