Labcorp introduces reflex hepatitis D test to improve detection of severe viral hepatitis

Labcorp has launched a new hepatitis D (HDV) reflex testing option as part of its Comprehensive Hepatitis Testing portfolio, aiming to close a gap in HDV monitoring.

The test automatically adds HDV testing to a blood sample already identified as hepatitis B positive, removing the need for additional draws or separate orders.

Labcorp estimates that 70,000 to 150,000 people in the United States have active HDV infection, yet fewer than 20% of hepatitis B‑positive patients are currently tested for the coinfection, leading to underdiagnosis.

By streamlining testing, the company hopes to identify more patients earlier, potentially reducing the risk of liver cirrhosis, liver cancer, and other serious complications associated with the most severe form of viral hepatitis.
