FDA rejects Osteal Therapeutics' combo therapy for joint-implant infections
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration rejected Osteal Therapeutics' lead combination therapy late last month. The agency cited concerns that prevented approval of the product intended to treat infections around joint implants.
The therapy was designed to act more quickly against bacteria and other microorganisms that can colonize the area surrounding a joint prosthesis. Osteal hoped the approach would reduce infection rates and improve outcomes for patients undergoing joint replacement surgery.
Osteal Therapeutics has not yet disclosed its next steps following the FDA decision. The company may seek additional data, modify the formulation, or pursue alternative regulatory pathways before attempting another submission.
