Emergent BioSolutions cuts 93 jobs and eliminates chief medical officer role in new restructuring plan

Aug 5, 2026·read at Fierce Biotech ↗LayoffsNegative

Emergent BioSolutions announced a new round of restructuring aimed at aligning the company with current business realities, disclosed alongside its second‑quarter earnings.

The plan includes laying off 93 employees across the organization and eliminating 21 open positions, reducing the global workforce to roughly 900.

The most senior R&D role will be removed; chief medical officer and head of research and development Simon Lowry will depart on Aug. 19, 2026. Stephanie Duatschek will be promoted to executive vice president and chief growth officer, merging R&D, business development and strategy.

The company will also close two wet labs in Maryland, exit a central warehouse lease, and has sold an underutilized office building for $6.4 million.
