Fecal microbiome transplant boosts peanut tolerance sixfold in early trial

Aug 5, 2026·read at Fierce Biotech ↗Positive readoutPositive

Researchers at Boston Children’s Hospital conducted a small open‑label phase 1 trial in which 15 adult participants received oral encapsulated fecal microbiome transplantation to test safety and efficacy for peanut allergy.

The study reported that participants who responded showed a sixfold increase in peanut protein tolerance, reaching up to 600 mg – roughly the amount in three peanuts – compared with less than half a peanut before treatment, and the effect persisted for up to four months.

While fecal transplants are already FDA‑approved for Clostridioides difficile infection and have a strong safety record, the investigators caution that the trial size is limited and further research is needed to confirm these promising findings as a disease‑modifying approach for food allergies.
