Amgen halts development of early-stage obesity drug AMG 513, shifting focus to phase-3 candidate MariTide

Aug 4, 2026·read at Fierce Biotech ↗Negative

Amgen announced it is stopping work on AMG 513, an early-stage obesity therapy, during its second-quarter earnings call.

The decision follows a previous FDA clinical hold in early 2025 that was later lifted, and mirrors the earlier discontinuation of another phase‑1 candidate, AMG 786, in 2024.

Amgen said the move reflects its high standards for obesity medicines and that it will continue to pursue its late-stage candidate MariTide, which remains in phase 3 trials.

The company will keep a phase‑1 study of AMG 513 open for patients already enrolled and will maintain investment in other preclinical obesity projects.
