Lisata Therapeutics cuts 72% of staff after merger with Kuva falls through and files lawsuit

Aug 4, 2026·read at BioSpace ↗LayoffsNegative

Lisata Therapeutics announced it is cutting about 72% of its full‑time workforce after a planned merger with Kuva Labs collapsed.

The company had 21 full‑time employees at the end of 2025, so roughly 15 staff members are being let go, including executive vice president of research and development and chief medical officer Kristen Buck.

Lisata said the reductions are needed to lower operating costs and preserve cash while it explores strategic alternatives. Some former employees may be rehired as external consultants.

In addition to the layoffs, Lisata has filed a lawsuit against Kuva Labs, alleging breach of the merger agreement and seeking damages plus a $2 million termination fee for its shareholders.
