Pfizer drops two obesity programs, including Metsera-derived GLP-1 candidate, in pipeline cleanout

Aug 4, 2026·read at Fierce Biotech ↗Negative

Pfizer announced it is removing two clinical‑stage obesity programs as part of its quarterly pipeline cleanout.

The first program, MET-224o, is an oral ultra‑long‑acting GLP‑1 receptor agonist that Pfizer acquired in its $10 billion purchase of Metsera. It was one of Metsera’s two lead oral candidates, the other already absent from Pfizer’s pipeline.

The second program, PF-07976016, is a GIPR antagonist that had reached phase 2 and was being tested in combination with YaoPharma’s oral GLP‑1 drug YP05002. Pfizer halted its development after reviewing phase 2a data.
