Simlukafusp Alfa plus atezolizumab shows safety but no benefit over standard care in metastatic kidney cancer

A clinical study evaluated the novel immunocytokine simlukafusp alfa combined with atezolizumab, with or without bevacizumab, in patients with unresectable metastatic renal cell carcinoma.

The combination regimens demonstrated a manageable safety profile and evidence of antitumor activity, confirming the ability of IL-2 based approaches to trigger an inflammatory tumor infiltrate.

However, response rates did not exceed those achieved with existing standard‑of‑care therapies, indicating that the doublet and triplet treatments did not provide additional clinical benefit in this setting.

These findings suggest further research is needed to improve the efficacy of IL‑2 based immunocytokines for kidney cancer.
