Oncology experience not always required for pharma jobs, recruiters say

Two recruiters say that while oncology experience can help, it is not the sole factor biopharma companies consider when hiring for oncology roles. They note that business stage, relationships and specific skill sets also play a part.

For companies in launch mode, recruiters stress the need for candidates with strong oncology relationships, relevant tumor‑type knowledge and prior launch experience. These firms want hires who can contribute immediately rather than spending months on a learning curve.

In clinical operations, specialized expertise is more critical. Employers look for depth in a particular therapeutic area and familiarity with specific markers, preferring candidates who have lived in that category.

Job seekers are advised to highlight any oncology‑related projects, networks or therapeutic knowledge they possess, even if their background is not exclusively in oncology, to make a stronger impression.
