FDA reopens comment period for BHT and launches post-market chemical safety program
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced two actions as part of its ongoing food chemical safety agenda.
The agency will reopen the comment period for the Request for Information on butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) in human food and as a food contact substance, extending the deadline by 30 days. Stakeholders can submit electronic comments via Regulations.gov using docket number FDA-2026-N-2526, or send written comments to the Dockets Management Staff in Rockville, MD.
FDA is not reopening the comment period for azodicarbonamide (ADA) because it received no requests for additional time. At the same time, the FDA finalized a new proactive post-market assessment program and began reassessments of both BHT and ADA.
