Global HIV funding drops 18%, raising fears of epidemic resurgence

Jul 27, 2026·read at STAT ↗Negative

A new UNAIDS report warns that the world could see a rebound of HIV infections after donor financing fell sharply last year.

Government contributions dropped by more than $1.5 billion to $7.3 billion in 2025, an 18 percent decline and the lowest level in almost twenty years. The United States still accounts for about 74 percent of donor government money.

Prevention programmes, especially in sub‑Saharan Africa where donor support once covered 83 percent of costs, are now at risk. The report also cites high national debt and setbacks in human‑rights and gender‑equality policies as additional concerns.
