Trump threatens 200% tariffs on imported generic drugs to force U.S. production

President Trump announced on Truth Social that generic drugs imported into the United States could face a 100% tariff starting Aug. 1, 2028, rising to 200% three years later. He framed the measure as a way to “reshore” generic pharmaceutical production and penalize companies that do not build U.S. facilities.

The proposal does not specify whether the tariffs would apply to finished medicines, active ingredients, or both, and no legal pathway for implementation was provided. Trump’s statement follows a pattern of using tariff threats to extract concessions from the pharma sector.

In February, the Supreme Court ruled that the president lacks authority to impose tariffs unilaterally, casting doubt on the feasibility of the plan. Industry analysts warn that such high duties could disrupt supply chains and increase costs for patients if ever enacted.
