GSK drops camlipant cough drug after mixed Phase 3 results

GSK announced it is halting development of camlipant, an experimental chronic cough medicine it acquired in a $2 billion purchase three years ago.

The decision follows two Phase 3 trials that showed mixed data and failed to meet most of the primary endpoints, leading the company to say the limited efficacy is unlikely to change patient care.

While the cough program is being discontinued, GSK will continue Phase 2 studies of camlipant in irritable bowel syndrome. The failure adds to recent setbacks for other P2X3 antagonists from Bayer and Merck, and removes a competitive threat to Trevi Therapeutics' chronic cough candidate.
