Arbutus and Sanofi launch new patent lawsuits against Pfizer, BioNTech and Moderna over mRNA lipid nanoparticle technology
Arbutus BioPharma filed three new lawsuits against Pfizer and BioNTech, accusing them of infringing patents covering the lipid nanoparticle (LNP) technology used to deliver mRNA vaccines. The filings expand the dispute to several European jurisdictions and Canada.
Sanofi has also initiated two lawsuits in New Jersey, targeting Pfizer and Moderna. The French company claims the same LNP patents are violated by the COVID-19 shots from both manufacturers.
The latest actions follow a multibillion-dollar settlement earlier this year in which Moderna paid Arbutus $178 million to resolve similar claims.
