U.S. officials urge pharma companies to increase domestic production of essential generic drugs

At a private gathering in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, senior officials from the Trump administration met with pharmaceutical leaders.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and HHS chief counsel Chris Klomp told the industry that the United States needs to shore up its supply chain for the 86 medicines the health department has labeled essential.

The officials warned that reliance on overseas manufacturers, particularly in China, could leave the country vulnerable to shortages, and they urged companies to move or expand generic drug production within the United States or nearby regions.

The meeting, described by participants as a call to action, signals a potential shift in policy focus toward onshoring critical drug manufacturing, though no specific incentives or regulations were detailed.
