New poll shows only half of U.S. adults can afford quality health care, with record-high concerns for next year

A recent West Health-Gallup Affordability Index found that roughly 50% of American adults said they could pay for health care and still access quality services in the past year.

The survey also recorded the highest level of worry about being able to afford care in the coming year since the index began tracking in 2021.

The findings echo personal stories such as Twannetta Weaver, a 43-year-old from Sanford, Florida, who chose a high-deductible plan to lower premiums, but after a back injury in 2025 faced steep medical bills that forced her to postpone her degree.

Weaver said the financial strain made her feel powerless and forced her to balance tuition, living costs and family health needs.

The poll highlights growing concerns among consumers about health-care costs and may signal pressure on employers and policymakers to address affordability.
