Trump administration earmarks $700 million for mental health and addiction programs, experts say funds are existing grants

The Trump administration announced a $700 million allocation for mental health and addiction initiatives.

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. described the money as new investments, but behavioral health experts clarified that the funds are drawn from previously authorized grants that Congress had already planned to spend.

Specialists said the funding is a positive step but far short of what is needed to address the nation’s drug crisis, noting that $700 million will not solve the problem on its own.

They also highlighted that roughly $50 billion has been set aside in litigation settlements, underscoring a much larger financial backdrop for mental health and addiction services.
