FDA approves first new sunscreen ingredient in over 25 years

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has cleared a new sunscreen active called bemotrizinol, the first novel ingredient to receive approval in more than a quarter‑century.

The agency said the chemical meets its safety criteria, causing little irritation and minimal absorption into the skin, and it is deemed safe for adults and children six months of age and older.

Dutch firm DSM Nutritional Products will initially market the ingredient under the brand name Parsol Shield, with an 18‑month exclusivity period before other manufacturers can use it. The product is expected to launch later this year, offering a new option for UV protection in the U.S. market.
