At STAT, the editorial staff, led by director Sarah Mupo, opened a dialogue with colleagues and asked readers for feedback on the spelling.

After reviewing the input, STAT decided to continue using the two-word form health care, saying it highlights the separate ideas of health and the care provided and reflects the variety of care services.

The outlet noted that while some terms naturally evolve into compounds, it views health care as an exception and will keep the traditional spelling for the foreseeable future.
