AstraZeneca’s oral GLP-1 candidate elecoglipron cuts weight 11% in Phase 2 obesity trial

A Phase 2 study (VISTA) of AstraZeneca’s oral GLP‑1 molecule elecoglipron in people with obesity showed an average weight loss of 11.2 % after 36 weeks, according to data presented at the American Diabetes Association meeting and published in The Lancet.

The trial’s results are comparable to the weight‑loss rate seen with Eli Lilly’s oral GLP‑1 pill Foundayo, which achieved a similar reduction in a longer Phase 3 study, but direct cross‑trial comparisons are limited by differing designs and durations.

While the findings suggest elecoglipron could become a competitive oral option, analysts caution that it remains early to judge its efficacy against other oral GLP‑1 agents already on the market, and note that related oral therapies have raised liver‑safety questions.
