Sanofi breaks ground on Frankfurt insulin API plant with €400 million German aid
Sanofi has started construction of a new insulin active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacturing facility at its Frankfurt site in Germany.
The plant, covering about 36,000 square meters, is being built after the company secured €400 million in financial support from the German government, which was approved by the European Commission.
The new facility is expected to be fully licensed and begin full‑scale insulin API production by 2032, adding to the existing operations that already handle API manufacturing, filling, device assembly and packaging for roughly 20 insulin products and employing around 4,000 staff.
The funding helps keep the Frankfurt site operational, as Sanofi had planned to close the API line without the aid, and aims to strengthen the resilience of the European insulin supply chain.
