Doctors, hospitals and insurers lobby states on medical AI regulation

Oct 14, 2026·read at STAT ↗RegulatoryNeutral

A coalition of lobbying groups representing physicians, hospitals, a health insurer and AI firms met in Washington to craft guidance for state regulation of medical AI.

The group, organized by the Federation of State Medical Boards, includes the American Medical Association, American Hospital Association, AI company Anthropic and Elevance Health among its 22 members.

The workgroup aims to balance expertise across medical regulation, AI development, care delivery, academic medicine, state AI policy and patient safety, with its recommendations to be made public.
