Trump-era foreign aid cuts likely hampered Ebola detection and response in Congo

The United States reduced funding for programs that help prevent and control infectious diseases in the Democratic Republic of Congo during the final months before a fast-moving Ebola outbreak, according to officials familiar with the effort.

The country is now facing the third-largest Ebola outbreak on record, with health authorities reporting roughly 130 deaths and more than 600 infections, including an American case.

U.S. officials have closed the border to travelers from the affected region, a move intended to limit spread, while U.S. passport holders remain exempt.

Experts say the aid reductions weakened disease surveillance, health-system support, and stockpiling of medical supplies, which likely delayed detection and hampered the overall response.
