Blue Shield of California plans to adopt Medicare-inspired chronic-care payment model by 2027

Oct 1, 2026·read at STAT ↗Neutral

Blue Shield of California, which serves about 6 million members, is among 17 major health plans that have pledged to adopt payment models based on the Medicare Innovation Center's ACCESS Model.

The insurer's chief medical officer Ravi Kavasery said the company is still working out details, such as whether to use CMS payment amounts and which provider organizations will participate.

Blue Shield expects to roll out these commercial chronic-care payment models in 2027, aiming to replicate the tech-enabled approach Medicare uses for managing chronic conditions.
