Beam Therapeutics sues YolTech and Serapha Bio over alleged theft of base editing trade secrets

Beam Therapeutics has filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Massachusetts accusing Chinese biotech YolTech Therapeutics and its U.S. partner Serapha Bio of using confidential information to develop a rival rare disease therapy. The complaint says a former Beam scientist, Zi Jun “Emma” Wang, left the company, secretly founded YolTech, and filed patent applications that relied on Beam’s trade‑secret data.

Beam seeks a court order to stop the alleged misuse of its trade secrets and to recover the value it says was improperly extracted by YolTech and Serapha. The company claims the disputed therapy was licensed between Beam and Serapha, but was built on stolen information.

Serapha Bio has denied the allegations, stating it will vigorously defend itself against Beam’s claims. The dispute highlights the growing legal risks around gene‑editing technologies and the protection of proprietary data in the biotech sector.

The lawsuit, filed on September 25, 2026, adds to ongoing tensions in the industry as companies race to commercialize base‑editing platforms while safeguarding their intellectual property.
