Heidi Overton grew up in Gallup, New Mexico, and as a college freshman expressed a desire to become a doctor and return to her small hometown. Her early ambition was highlighted in a 2007 interview where she said she would love to practice medicine in Gallup.

She entered the University of New Mexico School of Medicine through an early‑application program and earned her medical degree while maintaining ties to her rural roots. Over the past two decades she rose through the ranks of the Food and Drug Administration, taking on increasingly senior roles that culminated in her selection as the youngest‑ever nominee to lead the agency.
