Jehovah's Witnesses ease ban, permitting blood-derived products while still forbidding whole-blood transfusions

Sep 19, 2026·read at STAT ↗Neutral

The religious group announced a revision to its long-standing medical policy, now allowing members to receive products derived from donated blood.

The new guidance says individuals may accept plasma, platelets, red and white blood cells, and other components, leaving the decision to personal conscience.

However, the organization continues to prohibit whole-blood transfusions and does not permit members to donate blood for that purpose.

The change marks the second policy revision this year and reflects an effort to give members more flexibility in medical care while maintaining core doctrinal positions.
