WHO sees declining Ebola transmission in DRC but warns months of work remain

Sep 16, 2026·read at STAT ↗Positive

The World Health Organization’s director‑general said on Wednesday that transmission rates of Ebola are falling in most provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, offering a reason for cautious optimism.

He noted a reduction in cases in Ituri province, the epidemic’s epicenter, but emphasized that the decline is measured against a high baseline of infections.

The outbreak, driven by the Bundibugyo species of Ebola, remains the second‑largest on record with 7,258 confirmed cases and 3,510 deaths across seven northeastern provinces.

Tedros warned that several months of effort are still required to bring the epidemic fully under control.
