Stanford researchers create mice with human neurons to advance disease studies

Researchers at Stanford University have engineered mice whose cerebral cortex is largely filled with human neurons, replacing missing cells in the animal brain.

The chimeric mice are presented as a novel platform for investigating neurological disorders and for evaluating drug candidates, offering a more human‑relevant model than standard mouse studies.

Bioethicist Nita Farahany cautions that these animals occupy an ethical gray area, describing them as neither fully mouse nor fully human and calling for careful oversight of the technology.
