Gene-edited pig kidneys enable patients to go months without dialysis before receiving human transplants

Sep 3, 2026·read at STAT ↗Positive

Doctors at eGenesis reported that two patients who received genetically engineered pig kidneys were later able to receive human donor kidneys after a period on dialysis. The transition was not seamless; each patient had the xenograft removed and returned to dialysis for several months before a human organ became available.

The ability to spend a substantial time off dialysis demonstrates a milestone for xenograft research, confirming earlier primate studies that suggested the pig kidneys would not provoke problematic antibodies.

The cases mark the first successful handoff from a pig kidney to a human kidney in clinical settings, highlighting progress in interspecies transplant technology.

eGenesis is among a small group of biotech firms pursuing xenografts, and the outcomes may influence future development of pig organ transplants for patients with kidney failure.
